Post-Menopause
Maintaining optimal health and well-being and protecting the body against the health risks associated with a now permanent low level of female sex hormones
What is Post-Menopause?
Five years after the menopause marks the phase termed post-menopause. This phase usually occurs when a woman is in her late fifties. What is important during this stage is maintaining optimal health and well-being and protecting the body against the health risks associated with a now permanent low level of female sex hormones. Areas of specific importance are cardiovascular health, bone health, maintaining a healthy weight to mitigate against disease risk, genitourinary health and optimising sexual health and libido.
Post-Menopause and Associated Health Risks
I continue to support women´s health during all the post-menopause years, through customised dietary and lifestyle protocols. My aim is to support vitality and optimise physical and mental health.
Women in post-menopause are at increased risk for:
Heart Disease
Heart disease risk increases due to diminished levels of oestrogen.
Aim: Support cardiovascular health to mitigate against the risk of heart disease, with the aim to optimise the following markers:
-
Blood pressure levels
-
Cholesterol levels
-
Blood sugar levels
-
Body mass index (BMI)
Weight Gain
Hormonal changes can increase the risk of abdominal weight gain, in addition to loss of muscle mass, which slows the rate at which the body uses calories.
Aim: To support the maintenance of a healthy weight in order to prevent the onset or development of:
-
Metabolic syndrome
-
Heart disease
-
High blood pressure
-
High blood sugar levels
-
Excess abdominal fat
-
Abnormal (out of range) cholesterol levels and type 2 diabetes
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
Vaginal tissue becomes thinner and drier due to low oestrogen levels, making it easier for bacteria to flourish and potentially lead to UTIs
Aim: To support the health of the vaginal microbiome
-
Risk: Chronic UTIs
Genitourinary Syndrome
Oestrogen is a natural lubricant, so low levels leave the tissues around the vagina and vulva more dry and less flexible
Aim: To optimise the health of the tissues around the vagina and vulva, with the aim to reduce the risk of:
-
Genital Dryness
-
Impaired sexual health and function due to decreased lubrication, discomfort and pain
-
Decreased arousal, orgasm, desire
-
Soreness and irritation of the vagina or vulva
